Precisionist definition, a style of painting developed to its fullest in the U.S. in the 1920s, associated especially with Charles Demuth, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Charles Sheeler, and characterized by clinically precise, simple, and clean-edged rendering of architectural, industrial, or urban scenes usually devoid of human activity or presence. Although other paintings and style in general influenced modernist artistic movements in America, it could be said that Figure Five holds the foremost place in this equation of significance. Charles Demuth was born in Lancaster, Pa., on Nov. 8, 1883. Charles Demuth’s I Saw the Figure Five in Gold is probably one of the best known paintings of the Precisionist movement. A childhood leg injury left him lame, and at an early age he began to draw and paint.
Charles Demuth and Charles Sheeler are the artists most closely associated with Precisionism.

The urban works of Georgia O'Keeffe are also highly typical of this style. American painter Charles Demuth (1883-1935), distinguished for intimate watercolors and geometrized urban scenes, was one of the leading artists of precisionism, an American idiom of cubism in the 1920s.
