They are covered with long hair and are more closely related to the extinct woolly rhinos than any of the other rhino species alive today. The species was declared extinct in the wild in Malaysia in 2015.
Because of poaching, numbers have decreased more than 70% over the last 20 years, with the only viable population now in Indonesia.

Conservationists have launched an urgent bid to save the critically endangered Sumatran rhino, which has a wild population of fewer than 80. They’re small compared with other rhino species, and females give birth about every three to five years. Because they are the only Asian rhino species with two horns, they are the most threatened by poaching.
Seven Sumatran rhinos are currently held at the SRS, including two rhinos born in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo, and two born at the sanctuary.

There are five rhino species surviving today – Black, White, Greater One-Horned (or Indian), Javan and Sumatran, and several sub-species within these groups.. Fewer than a hundred remain in Indonesia, in isolated pockets. The number of Sumatran rhinos has dropped an estimated 70 percent in the past two decades, mostly due to poaching.
