A team of Australian scientists has discovered a new species of marsupial lion which has been extinct for at least 19 million years. The meat-eating lion, the size of a dog and weighing about 23kg, was identified through fossilised remains found in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, the nation’s most lucrative* fossil site. Thylacoleo ("pouch lion") is an extinct genus of carnivorous marsupials that lived in Australia from the late Pliocene to the late Pleistocene (2 million to 46 thousand years ago).
