The duck-billed dinosaurs that roamed North America some 77 million years ago were giant herbivores with a flat, paddle-shaped bony crest that completely covered the back of the top of the skull. Brain sizes and brain structure volumes of crested specimens from a population of ‘Hochbrutflugenten’ ducks (HBTcr), living under seminatural conditions, were compared with those of other duck breeds, among them the breed ‘Landente’ with the same morphological trait, the crest (LEcr).
It has its appearance because it is heterozygous for a genetic mutation causing a deformity of the skull. The Bali Duck weighs around 2.25–2.75 kg (5–6 lb) with a slender, upright body. Previously, the only duck-bills known from the Cretaceous Arctic were hadrosaurs, or non-crested duck-billed dinosaurs. The Corythosaurus belonged to the second group due to its crested skull. Crests can occur in ducks of any breed, as it’s technically a genetic defect. The crested gene that these ducks carry though is considered to be a lethal gene, in that the crest is formed through a hole in the top of the duckling’s skull. 1. Crested Ducks (CR) are widely bred by poultry fanciers and are in focus of animal welfare activists, because they show occasionally intracranial fat bodies, incoordination of locomotion and high pre- and postnatal mortality. In morphometric studies, a significant increase in the capacity of the cranium was found in Crested ducks compared to other examined breeds (Abacot Ranger, German Pekin ducks). As a result, when a pair of crested ducks breed, the young sort out in the usual 1-2-1 ratio:-does this mean the duck is quackers:- If a duckling receives the gene from both parents, it will not survive and die in the shell just before hatching. Crested ducks are more prone to neurological problems for that reason (it’s a skull deformity, as you likely know)… Breeding crested ducks is breeding for a defect, simply because it has an affect on the ducks … The Bali Duck (also known as the Balinese Crested Duck or Crested Runner Duck) is a lightweight breed of domesticated duck raised primarily for decoration or as pets, although they are good layers. It is similar to the Indian Runner Duck, differing only in having a crest on the top of the head.. Getting quite tame this crested duck, The Crested Duck is a breed descended from the mallard . The bonebed was previously known to be rich in hadrosaurine hadrosaurids (non-crested 'duck-billed' dinosaurs). The hadrosaurids or the duck-billed dinosaurs have been classified by scientists and paleontologists into two prominent groups, namely the hadrosaurinae and the lambeosaurinae. This increase in cranial capacity in Crested ducks results from the occurrence and enlargement of a tentorial fatty depot during craniogenesis. The skull fragment comes from a lambeosaurine, which is a type of crested duck-billed dinosaur.
