Mark the eggs as you go, making notes on what you see so you can keep track of the egg’s development. This can overload the parents, and if incubation has already begun in one nest, they will be out of synch for hatching. Additionally, only candle an egg on days 7 and 14 since you want to keep them safe in the incubator as much as possible.
Do NOT remove eggs from a nest unless you 100% certain they have been abandoned.
Make sure to only take the egg home if you can't find a nest or a wildlife rehabilitator who's willing to take it. shine a light on the eggs constantly. Do not "foster" eggs into another nest. You will have poorer hatching rates from refrigerated eggs, but better than if they were stored at room temperature for a longer period of time. Raccoons did the same thing to my bluebird nest last year and this is how we fixed it… make sure you have a baffle stovepipe that is 3 feet wide, and place it 1 1/2 feet above the ground all the way around the tree or pole, the raccoons will shimmy up the tree and reach in and grab the eggs or babies. The eggs of almost all domestic bird species can be incubated at the same incubation temperature; because of that, eggs of several different bird species can be incubated at the same time within the same incubator.
It can take 24-48 hours for all eggs to hatch.

The primary reasons to artificially incubate eggs involve poor parenting by the breeder pair--birds that eat or break their own eggs, birds that abandon their eggs or bury them in the nesting material and birds that injure or kill newly hatched chicks. If you need to collect eggs for a longer period of time the eggs are best stored in a fridge until you need to hatch them.
