The tailless Hoolock Gibbon is the only ape found in India. The primate is native to eastern Bangladesh, Northeast India and Southwest China.

Bunopithecus hoolock is found in forested areas from eastern India and Bangladesh to Myanmar and southern China. This new species was discovered in eastern Myanmar and southwestern China. We conducted a survey of the distribution and population status of the eastern hoolock gibbon Hoolock leuconedys in non-protected fragmented forest areas of the Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh, India, during September 2010–June 2011. Geographically, the natural range pf Hoolock gibbons extends east to the Salween River and west to the Brahmaputra River. The western hoolock gibbon is ‘Endangered’ according to the IUCN Red List, though it is widely distributed in all the seven states of the Northeast. Eastern hoolocks are listed as a ‘Vulnerable’ species and they are found only in eastern Arunachal Pradesh and in the Sadiya subdivision of Assam. Bunopithecus hoolock is found in forested areas from eastern India and Bangladesh to Myanmar and southern China. Geographically, the natural range pf Hoolock gibbons extends east to the Salween River and west to the Brahmaputra River.
Of all gibbon species, their range extends the farthest north and east (Wolfheim, 1983).
